CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Corpus Christi Nueces County Public Health Director Annette Rodriguez told KRIS 6 News Saturday that one of the recent babies who have tested positive for COVID-19 is the child of a mother who also has the virus.

Rodriguez said the baby was born within the past three weeks and its status is unknown.

Her announcement comes on the heels of her announcement during Friday's press conference where she said 85 local infants under the age of one tested positive for the coronavirus.

County Judge Barbara Canales clarified that statistic Saturday night, saying the 85 infants are an accumulation of the county's numbers over the course of the pandemic.

One child under the age of one has died locally. That child was brought to the hospital with unrelated symptoms and was tested for COVID-19 while at the hospital.

Rodriguez said the child later died at home from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Health officials have said they don't know if coronavirus was the cause of that death, but an autopsy is being performed to determine the exact cause of death.
