Nueces co. COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths continue to rise

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces county COVID-19 cases, hospitalizations, and deaths have risen dramatically over Independence Day weekend.

Officials expressed concern in a news release Saturday when three residents were reported dead on the same day.

"The deaths make a total of 3 in one day and brings the total deaths to 13," said a press release from the city. "The rapid increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to COVID-19 continues to be a major concern for Public Health."

One additional reported death Sunday makes four deaths over the past two days. Which is the most COVID-19 related deaths in any two day period for Nueces county. There have been 14 deaths total.

The county also reported another jump from 291 hospitalized Saturday to 307 Sunday with 80 patients in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

203 new coronavirus cases were reported by the county Sunday.

21,728 tests have been administered by Nueces county since the start of the pandemic.

431 have recovered from the virus. Those residents have been asked by Nueces County judge Barbara Canales to donate their convalescent plasma to help current COVID-19 patients recover.

Residents are still reminded to follow these guidelines for public health:

  • Stay at home as much as possible
  • Wear a face covering in all public areas
  • Leave 6 feet or more between you and others (non-family members)
  • Wash your hands as often as possible
  • Do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid being around people who are sick
  • If sick, stay home and self-isolate
