CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — "We gotta be in shape right? Every step you take makes you that much better and we can actually do football when we're allowed to.”

Since most of the spring conditioning season was wiped out to due COVID-19, that’s a lot easier said than done.

"They all need to do work,” Tuloso-Midway football coach Wade Miller said. “A lot of them didn't do much while we were off.”

So for the next several weeks, these athletes will be out here getting in football shape and they get ready for two-a-days which are set to start on Aug. 3.

Quarterback Cristian Benavides is on the comeback trail after suffering a serious knee injury last season. Not being able to use the school’s facilities until now was difficult, he said.

"I had to do most of the workouts at home, so we could not use the weight room here or go to the trainer’s room,” Benavides said. “So, I kind of had to learn different workouts and do them on my own. It was difficult, but we got it done.”

All of his teammates had to find a way to adapt and stay in shape on their own. Including lineman Adam McKenna.

"You have to think of more than what you have,” McKenna said. “It's just push-ups, going out running, getting yourself in shape and eating right. I believe if you do all those things, you will be just as fine as working out here.”

And for now, all of these athletes will continue to play catchup on their conditioning, depending on what the UIL decides on the official start of the football season.

The Warriors hope to play their first game on Aug. 28.
