TAFT, Texas — Today, we will bring you stories about the tributes held today here and around the country.
But we begin tonight with the funeral of a man who served the city as a firefighter for decades before dying of COVID-19.
Today’s funeral was a tribute fitting of Marty Vara’s life.
“Our dad was a very selfless man,” said his youngest son, Michael Vara. “He was always giving to everyone.”
Vara was a 31-year veteran of the Corpus Christi Fire Department and a life-long resident of Taft.
"He always had a smile on his face,” CCFD co-worker K.T. Goodman said. “He had a big heart. That even thru his career he became a nurse."
Marty Vara worked at Christus Spohn Memorial as a nurse in the emergency room and later became the lead school nurse for the ISD in his hometown of Taft.
He died last week from COVID-19.
Friends, family, former colleagues and the honor guard showed up today to pay their final respects
“We're saddened by his loss, but we gather as one to remember him and we support the family during these times,” CCFD Chief Robert Rocha said.
Vara’s family said they were touched by the tribute that Marty received.
“We just appreciate all the support this community and fire gave,” said Michael Vara, his oldest son. “It means a lot. My dad always gave for the community and it’s great that everyone showed support today.” It was the end of watch after decades of service.
