CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The ongoing health crisis has many people nervous about how their bills are going to get paid, including local veterans.

However, there is help.

The Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend has teamed up with the Texas Veterans Commission to assist veterans to meet their financial needs.

Salvation Army officials said the COVID-19 worldwide health scare has many veterans needing assistance like never before, and they are proud to help serve and support veterans and their families.

The Texas Veterans Commission grant helps take the pressure off those who are worried about paying their rent or other bills.

“It’s important for our veterans and veteran-dependents and surviving spouses to know, there is help out there especially what’s going on right now with COVID-19,” said Salvation Army of the Coastal Bend Lt. Laura Gesner.

The non-profit said they have $48,000 in available funds to spend, and it all must be distributed by June 15.

These funds are available to any veteran who applies.

“If you were honorably discharged or dishonorably discharged, it does not matter for this grant,” Lt. Gesner said.

Coastal Bend Homeless Program Manager Carrie Myers works closely with veterans at the Veteran Affairs Outpatient Clinic.

Myers said she’s personally seen how this grant can assist many veterans and their families and how it helps them get back on their feet.

“This is not meant to make someone feel bad or feel like they are in a bad place," she said. "This is to help you get on your feet, this is to help you stay housed.”

If you would like to apply for assistance, stop by the Salvation Army Administration Office at 501 Josephine St.

Staff will connect you with a caseworker.

You will need to bring your identification card, proof with a connection of the military, and what bills you will need assistance with.
