6 Investigates: Island IGA grocery opening delayed

PADRE ISLAND, Texas — An island grocery store slated for a summer opening is now delayed into next year, owing difficulties with key infrastructure and environmental hurdles, city officials say.

The IGA on Park Road 22 should be in the final stages of construction but as of last week, remains an undeveloped tract. 6 Investigates has since learned the project has stalled due to a lack of sewer lines, a harder-than-usual environmental assessment related to an adjacent wet land, and a permitting process involving flood plain management.
