The recent heavy rains we’ve seen in the Coastal Bend are already causing an uptick in the mosquito population.

The worst is yet to come, but vector control and local pest control businesses say they’re gearing up to meet mosquito season head-on.

Businesses like ABC Home and Commercial services say they’re busy after the recent severe weather, and they’ve already begun treating for these pests.

“This is a very crazy time of the year,” said Vic Valentine, the general manager of the company. “Right after the first big rain, the temperatures got a little bit warmer, humidity got a little bit higher.”

Now you’ll find mosquitoes all over the city and their numbers are climbing. But there are some things you can do to protect yourself from these pests:

  • Use insect repellent
  • Wear long sleeves and pants when outside
  • Avoid being outdoors at dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most active
  • Drain standing water.

County vector control officials tell KRIS 6 they’ve already started setting up traps for mosquitoes to monitor the population. They’ll begin spraying for larva when the population gets to a certain count.
