Higher utility trust fund could mean higher home prices in Corpus Christi

The cost of building a home in Corpus Christi might be going up.

City staff wants to drastically increase what builders pay into a trust fund for utility work, while those builders favor a more gradual approach.

Builders voluntarily pay a percentage to the utility based on property acreage, and are reimbursed for utility construction.  Annual percentage increases were scrapped when the housing market tanked.

Now the city wants to make up for lost time. And get those contributions in line with the national average as soon as possible.

Home builders believe since paying into the fund is voluntary, they should have more of a say about contribution increases.
