YWCA panel discusses supporting equal pay for women

The YWCA will sponsor “Never-the-Less: a panel discussion supporting equal pay for women” at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church, 900 S. Shoreline.

“Equal Pay Day for Women” will be on Tuesday, marking the 2019 date that women’s earnings match what their male counterparts earned in 2018.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Texas women average only 79 cents for every dollar men earn to perform the same work.

Nancy Wesson-Dodd, YWCA President/CEO, says the community should be proud of the progress made by women, but much work remains to be done.

“Young women just entering the workforce need to learn negotiation techniques now, as that will affect their earnings their entire working life,” Dodd said. “When they start low, they stay low. That’s what our Equal Pay Day Forum is about—learning from experienced business people how to negotiate a fair salary.”

The goal of the event is to educate women about pay inequity, offer solutions to wage discrimination and encourage women to take action.

This year’s event is sponsored in collaboration of the YWCA, AAUW, Executive Women International and League of Women Voters.

Panelists will include :

  • Inna Klein, judge of the 214th District Court
  • Dr. Amy Aldridge Sanford, associate vice president of academic affairs, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi University
  • Amy Villarreal, deputy executive director, Workforce Solutions

The event is open to the public. Registration is at www.ywcacc.org . Lunch is included.
