It’s the first day of school for many staff and students across the Coastal Bend.

On Monday morning, more than 38,000 students from Corpus Christi Independent School District began their  first day of the 2018-2019 school year.

Hundreds of parents dropped off their kids at Dawson Elementary. C.C.I.S.D. Superintendent Dr. Roland Hernandez was there to greet staff members and families.

Security will be a big priority this year, Hernandez said. The district is looking to partner with the Texas Department of Public Safety and other law enforcement agencies to increase security.

“We do have a strong police force in the school district but this is bringing in D.P.S. troopers,” he said. “They’ll be in the schools. They’ll be visible. They’ll be meeting our teachers, talking to our students and their families and helping them feel more safe and secure.”

Hernandez also encouraged parents to get involved with their child’s school.
