Crews are finally dismantling an eyesore that has been attracting transients for years.

This week, crews have been removing pieces of the two-story home that once stood on Third Street and Buford Street near Gaslight Square.

In February 2018, that vacant home was gutted by a fire that may have been started by a homeless person.

According to Corpus Christi Police Captain Chris White, who oversees Code Enforcement, the house had asbestos. So, crews had to wait for a team with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality to give them special instructions on how to remove the debris.

Captain White says the city is paying for the cleanup. Once the cleanup is done, the property owner will have to reimburse the city.
