Some big improvements could be coming to Corpus Christi’s Bill Witt Park.

If City Council gives the go-ahead, construction of about $570,000 in improvements is expected to begin in August.

The park is widely used by different sports leagues and visitors in Corpus Christi. Juan Salazar, the president of Padre Little League says the league uses the park several times a week.

Salazar also says when it rains, there are drainage problems at the baseball field the team uses. But improvements like draining and irrigation upgrades could fix that.

"It’ll keep the undesirable weeds and grass from growing in that one spot. It just looks terrible," Salazar said. "We’ll get a little more water pressure to be able to water our fields and maintain them."

Other improvements could include landscaping and shade structures. Additions could also include a dog park with a pergola and a water foundation.

Dog owners like Dan Munoz say a dog park for his five-month old puppy would give him the exercise he needs.

"That sounds like a fun idea for him to mingle around with other pets, other dogs, and maybe build some friendships," Munoz said.

These improvements are also a chance to bring even more visitors to the South Side park.

"It’s going to be something that people are going to want to spend more time [at]," said Meagan Foglesong, a park visitor. "There are a lot of people out here all the time. So I just think it’s going to be better for our community," she added.

The park is located on the city’s South Side on Yorktown Boulevard near Airline Road.

The City of Corpus Christi also plans to demolish several buildings at the park. Construction for the park is expected to be finished in February 2019.

Park improvements were discussed at Tuesday’s Council meeting. Park improvements will be discussed again at the next meeting on July 24th.
