A woman separated from her young son at the border has been reunited with him right here in Corpus Christi.

Back in May, Lilian Martinez and her 5-year-old son traveled to the Arizona border with Mexico seeking asylum.

The pair were originally from Guatemala.

Until July 11th, Martinez was detained at an Arizona facility.

Upon her release, the mother began looking for her son.

With the help of the non-profit group Immigrant Families Together, as well as local group Corpus Christi Immigration Coalition, Martinez found her son here in Corpus Christi.

The child had been taken to the Bokencamp Children’s Shelter before being placed with a foster family.

Bokencamp is one of 37 licensed shelters in the state that had contracts with the Office of Refugee Resettlement.

Just last month, KRIS 6 was told that Bokencamp was not housing any children who had been detained at the border.

The mother and son now wait for an asylum hearing.
