This morning hundreds of people packed the Island in the heat and humidity for the Sand Castle 5-k run. The race created by Nueces County Precinct 4 Commissioner Brent Chesney lined the shore near Bob Hall Pier.

The proceeds benefited Camp Sandcastle.

Camp Sandcastle is a program designed to provide an outdoor experience for kids diagnosed with diabetes.

Volunteers with the run said it’s important for these kids with diabetes to be able to have normal childhood experiences.

Last year’s run also allowed a donation to the American diabetes Association.
