CORPUS CHRISTI – In August of 2017, one-year-old Royalty Coleman was killed after a driver hit his stroller and kept driving.
Corpus Christi Police investigators have been working the case for 11 months. Officers say there is a person of interest, however, no charges have been filed.
“In speaking with the investigator, we have accumulated as much evidence as we can. We have the case pretty much ready to be submitted. We’re still waiting on lab results to come back,” Lt. J.C. Hooper of the Corpus Christi Police Dept. said.
Lab samples have been sent to the Texas DPS Crime Lab in Austin.
“We’re able to do quite a bit here with forensics, but there are certain processes that we cannot do here,” Lt. Hooper said.
In this particular case, CCPD is waiting on DNA evidence from inside the truck believed to be involved in this hit-and-run.
KRIS 6 News reached out to the Texas Dept. of Public Safety and received the following statement from DPS spokesman, Tom Vinger:
“The department works as quickly as possible to address the high demand at our crime labs with existing resources and funding – at no charge to law enforcement agencies throughout the state.
Cases can be worked more quickly in specific situations, such as a pending trial. DPS encourages law enforcement and prosecutors to communicate their needs in cases throughout the testing process. Agencies are urged to contact us directly with any concerns.
Otherwise, cases are worked chronologically. Private labs are also an option for agencies with funding to pay for services, as it’s possible those labs may provide faster turnaround.”
