University officials were joined by architects and building contractors as they hoisted the final beam to the top of the new building, currently under construction at the intersection of Armstrong and Santa Gertrudis Streets in Kingsville.

Guests at the ceremony were invited to sign their names to the beam at what will become the home of the Texas A&M Kingsville music department.

Faculty, staff and students were previously given the opportunity to sign the beam.

The topping out ceremony is a tradition started by ancient Scandinavians, and later spread across the world as a symbolic midpoint milestone of a construction project.
