The primary goal of the FBI Citizens Academy is to build safer communities.

The bureau hosted its first hands-on event this weekend in Corpus Christi.

"So we have leaders here from the NAACP, the banking industry, prominent business leaders, and the Port Authority," Edward Michel with the FBI said.

Trainees were given the tools to properly evaluate the threat of a dangerous gunman, and directors emphasized that crowded areas are most commonly targeted by mass shooters.

"By seeking out places where there are mass populations like banks, schools, and churches," Michel said.

City leaders and business managers were trained on gun safety, and worked one-on-one with an FBI instructor.

"It teaches them firsthand of the threats that are out there, and how we assess and mitigate these threats. An informed public is a safe public," Michel said.
