Rollover accident kills young boy, sends four to hospital

A 10-year old boy is dead and three people had to be air-lifted to the hospital after rollover accident yesterday near Woodsboro.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety investigators, a Ford F-350 carrying five people was traveling north on U.S. Highway 77, approximately two miles north of Woodsboro at about 2:35 p.m. when the truck’s right, rear wheel assembly came off, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The truck rolled through the median and into the southbound lanes of US 77, ejecting two passengers who were not wearing seatbelts, DPS said.

Jonathan Gonzalez-Pena, 10, of Rio Grande City, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Three other passengers were transported by Halo Flight to Spohn Shoreline Hospital, and are listed in critical but stable condition, DPS said.

The truck’s driver was transported by ambulance and is listed in stable condition.

DPS says troopers are further investigating the cause of the accident.
