The Corpus Christi Fire Department will be introducing new members from their 39th Fire Academy.

The cadets will receive their official firefighter/paramedics’ badge during a graduation ceremony in the FEMA Dome on the Del Mar College West Campus.

The Corpus Christi Fire Department will be welcoming more than two dozen members to its firefighting family during the 39th Fire Academy graduation ceremony.

"It is a big day for not only the fire department, not only for the cadets, but also for the city. The fire department is graduating their cadet class of firefighters and once the graduation ceremony takes place, they will get their station assignment and report for duty," said C.C.F.D. Chief Robert Rocha.

The cadets began their journey to join the ranks of the Corpus Christi Fire Department in August of 2016.

Their preparation included 1,728 training hours for EMT/Paramedic, 720 hours of fire training, and 240 hours in protocol review to go along with many hours of community service projects.

"The hiring process is a very long process. Firefighters have to take a written examination, physical agility test, and an oral interview before they are selected. Once they are selected, they go to what we call the fire academy which is located out at Del Mar College," said Rocha.

As soon as the cadets walk the stage, their journey will begin as Corpus Christi firefighters at engine houses throughout the city.

"It is always good news when we add new blood to the fire department. New firefighters offer youth and enthusiasm when they report for duty, and we will make sure our firefighters keep them safe and train them to do a good job," said Rocha.

The Fire Academy graduation ceremony will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m.

C.C.F.D. Chief Robert Rocha attributes the success of the academy to the cooperation of all the different departments, including those of the Del Mar College, C.C.I.S.D. and other school districts which act as training resources.
