A pedestrian was pronounced dead after a major traffic accident on S. Padre Island Dr., Friday night.

The incident happened just after 11 p.m. on the highway’s westbound side near Waldron Road in Flour Bluff, prompting police to shut down the roadway as far back as Aquarius Rd. on Padre Island.

Corpus Christi Police Department said the victim, identified as a transient 36-year-old female, was crossing the roadway with her husband when the accident occurred.

Officials said a driver sighted the victim’s husband and swerved to avoid him but didn’t see the woman prior to the collision. The driver sighted a nearby officer conducting a traffic stop and pulled over to alert him to the accident.

The victim died as a result of her injuries. Police said they do not expect charges to be filed, noting that the pedestrians would be at fault due to crossing the highway.

An investigation was ongoing at time of writing. Further details were not immediately available.

CCPD said traffic would be freed up as soon as a medical examiner cleared the scene.

This is a developing story, we’ll provide further updates here as soon as we’re able.
