The Texas Department of Public Safety says motorists should continue to expect nightly closures next week at the Staples Street intersection with South Padre Island Drive, as well as the eastbound frontage road just east of Kostoryz Road.

Various eastbound and westbound lanes of SH 358 will also close nightly from Everhart Road to Staples Street and at the Staples Street bridge. At least one lane of SH 358 will remain open in each direction.

These closures are scheduled Sunday, April 15, through Thursday, April 19, from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. All work is weather permitting:

Frontage Road Intersection Closures:

Sunday, April 15, through Tuesday, April 17

  • The SH 358 eastbound-westbound and westbound-eastbound turnaround lanes will be closed at Staples Street. Motorists may instead make left turns at the Staples Street eastbound and westbound frontage road traffic signals.

Wednesday, April 18, and Thursday, April 19

  • Staples Street will be closed between the SH 358 eastbound and westbound frontage roads. Northbound Staples Street traffic will detour to the eastbound frontage road turnaround before Airline Road then turn right from the westbound frontage road onto Staples Street. Southbound Staples Street traffic will detour to the westbound frontage road turnaround before Everhart Road then turn right from the eastbound frontage road onto Staples Street.

Main Lane Closures:

Sunday, April 15, through Thursday, April 19

  • The left two eastbound lanes of SH 358 will be closed from Everhart Road to Staples Street.
  • The left westbound lane of SH 358 will be closed at the Staples Street Bridge.

Eastbound Frontage Road Closures:

Sunday, April 15, through Thursday, April 19

  • The right lane of the eastbound frontage road will be closed for a short segment just east of Kostoryz Road. All driveways will remain accessible from the frontage road.

TxDOT says work will also continue on the traffic signals at the eastbound SH 358 frontage road intersection with Bear Lane.

This work is planned for 6 a.m. – 9 p.m. Monday-Friday. The intersection will remain open, but motorists should be aware of road crews in the area.

The speed limit in the construction area is 55 mph on the main lanes and 40 mph on the frontage road. Traffic fines double in work zones when workers are present.
