The final level is here for a local game shop in Corpus Christi.

Play Again Classic Video Games LLC, which owns a shop by the same name along with Play Again Classic Party Center has announced that it will be closing its doors after nearly 11 years serving gamers in Corpus Christi.

The announcement came on the company’s Facebook page, adding that the decision to close was based on a number of factors.

"There are a lot of reasons why…but the main one is that the owner and our staff have suddenly been approached with opportunities that are bigger than our store and we can’t reasonably move on without shutting down," wrote Timothy Bell, Play Again’s manager.

For almost 11 years, Play Again has served Corpus Christi and the surrounding areas, catering to gamers looking for everything from the nostalgia of a classic Nintendo game to modern comics to rare collectibles. But this isn’t an easy task.

"The market is now flooded with cheap or bootleg products that would force a drop in the quality of our restored consoles," the company said in a statement.

The difficulties of finding high-quality repair parts and gear along with changing interests in the market have made "classic" game shops like Play Again struggle to keep pace. Despite the challenge, Play Again has set the pace locally.

"The thing we’re most proud of is how we changed the retro game market for the better," Bell added.

Play Again will no longer offer its well-known One Year Warranties on consoles and games as of April 4 as part of its transition to closure. All sales will be final, with some exception. The store will also offer a Loyalty Sale to certain customers (for details, contact Play Again’s management).

On May 15, the shop will stop taking trade-ins and ordering new products. Play Again Classic Party Center will also close.

Then, sometime near the store’s 11th anniversary, the shop will hold a closing sale ahead of its final level. The exact date of closure has not yet been announced.
