Fact Check: Downed Fences

Hurricane Harvey also damaged fences all across the city.

And our fact check team asked the city, can you be cited if you have a downed fence as a result of the storm.

We talked to city code enforcement and found that is indeed a real fact.

The city code says residential homeowners don’t have to have a fence. But you can be cited if you have a fence that is structurally unsound or has collapsed on the ground.

Commander David Blackmon, with the Corpus Christi Police Department, says if you do have a fence that is on the ground, you have to pick it up, you can’t just lay it there. At that point, it becomes solid waste, and it is a code violation, and you can be cited for it

The city is allowing a grace period because there were so many fences blown down by Harvey. But they also say if your fence is damaged or downed, you need to start fixing it.
