Volunteers needed to help with tax preparation

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX — For most, the joy of the holiday season is quickly replaced by the reality of tax preparation season. Like the change from fall to winter, it happens each year, without fail.

Fortunately, there is help for those who need it, and it comes from the Coastal Bend Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Coalition, which includes the United Way of the Coastal Bend, Goodwill Industries of South Texas, the IRS, Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend, West Oso High School, Nueces County Keach Family Library, Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, Del Mar College and Coastal Bend College.

In fact, they are now looking for those who are willing to be trained and then volunteer to help others complete their taxes for the 2020 season.

There are no prerequisites for those interested in helping. Volunteers will participate in four free training sessions, receiving in-depth training on the tax code from IRS certified trainers. Once the certification test is passed, those volunteers will then be ready to assist low-to-moderate income taxpayers -- free of charge -- in order to help hardworking individuals and families keep more of what they earn.

Each of the free training classes must be attended, and will be held at the Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend Sunrise Mall Career Center (5858 S.P.I.D.) on Jan. 6, 7 and 9 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. and Jan. 11 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Those who have questions may call (361) 882-2529. To express your desire to attend the training series, email Jamey.Byrne@uwcb.org.
