ARANSAS PASS, Texas — One man is dead following an overnight traffic accident involving police.

It happened in Aransas Pass just after 1 a.m. as a man was trying to evade police.

Officers were responding to a call about a motorcycle speeding up and down on Deberry Avenue. The motorcyclist, 25-year-old Tony Kaufman, allegedly taunted the officer before speeding away.

Field Training Officer Jack McCarty and his trainee Officer Jairo Herrera arrived on scene shortly after. During the pursuit, their SUV unit struck Tony Kaufman's motorcycle who was reportedly driving with his lights off.

Both Kaufman and his motorcycle were sent into a grass field. Kaufman was killed on impact.

Aransas Pass police say Kaufman had several prior encounters with law enforcement, including evading arrest with a vehicle back in 2017.

McCarty and Herrera received minor injuries from that crash. Both of them have already been medically cleared for duty.

If you have any information regarding this incident, Aransas Pass police are asking you to contact Captain Dave Muniz at 361-758-5224.
