CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A new policy is in effect on two major social media platforms, which might make parents happy.
What's now in effect - as of this morning – Facebook and Instagram have restricted who can see ads, specifically for tobacco and alcohol-related products.
Companies that promote these products now have to restrict their pages so that only people ages 18 and above can see them.
The amount of time teenagers spend on their phones can go hand in hand with addiction, especially after repeatedly being exposed to these ads, according to Dr. Oliver Cruz-Milan, a professor in the marketing department at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
"It increases the appeal to the brands and certainly it is a force on the consumers to become at least interested,” he said.
Facebook will remove any groups that do not apply this protocol for their advertising.
