Hurricane Harvey: Ceremonies planned for anniversary of storm

Hurricane Harvey made a direct hit on the Coastal Bend one year ago today.

Harvey, a major category 4 hurricane, made landfall on the northern end of San Jose Island, about 5 miles east of Rockport, Texas. Many residents are still making daily efforts to recover from the storm.

There are many events happening around the Coastal Bend today for residents to take time to reflect on the last year and show support for those still recovering.

Port Aransas:

Port Aransas will host a Hurricane Harvey Day of Remembrance at Robert Pointe’s Park beginning from 9 a.m. Until 10 a.m. During the ceremony, Port Aransas first responders will be presented with flags for their service during the storm.

At 7:30 p.m. a prayer and flag ceremony will be held for the community at Robert’s Pointe Park.

Tomorrow, Sunday, August 26, Port Aransas will hold a Recovery Celebration Service at 6 p.m. at the park.

Rockport:

The community is invited to join area churches and Southern Baptists of Texas Convention Disaster Relief for a time of prayer, reflection, and encouragement at Coastal Oaks Church, 2002 FM 3036. Events will run as follows:

9 AM – HARVEY GRATEFUL FENCE
Continue to place items on the fence

10 AM – BOOK SIGNINGS, REFRESHMENTS & HARVEY PHOTOGRAPHY
Woman’s Club at Rockport Harbor

10 AM – FIRST RESPONDERS MEET at the Festival Grounds.
First responders will be by their different vehicles allowing the public to formally thank them.

11 AM – FIRST RESPONDERS PROGRAM

11 :30 AM – HEB SPONSORED PICNIC OF HAMBURGERS, CHIPS AND DRINK FOR 2000 PEOPLE
Everyone is encouraged to bring picnic blankets and wear patriotic clothing.

6 PM – ROCKPORT LITTLE THEATRE & ROCKPORT CULTURAL ARTS DISTRICT BLOCK PARTY
North Street and Main Street will be closed for a block party with live entertainment by Janelle. There will be food trucks, and beverages, vendors with Harvey art, and games for children, and more entertainment. Harvey signs are encouraged.

6 PM – FULTON HARBOR – HILDA LAMAS PERFORMS
At the white fence next to Charlotte Plummers an outdoor performance will be held by Hilda Lamas.

Ingleside:

9 AM – Join us for the Grand Re-Opening of the Ingleside Public Library on Saturday, August 25th from 9:00 a.m. to noon! Music, face-painting, special guests, and more fun! 2775 Waco Street.
