A Portland woman who has been wanting to help out those in need is spending her free time at her new Addi machine, hand-cranking out hats to give to the homeless.

These are not your normal hand-made knitted hats. The hand-cranked Addi machine allows April Cummings to make 10-20 hats every few hours, complete with inner linings for extra warmth.

“Before she got the machine, she was doing it all by hand,” April’s husband, Ian Cummings, said. “Now the machine allows her to do something she’s wanted to do for a long time, which is helping out people in need.”

The Coastal Bend is expecting a major arctic front this weekend. Ian says his wife is determined to help those who may not have adequate shelter and warmth.

The hats will be given to shelters around town who will then dispense them to those in need.

“This is a labor of love for her,” Ian said. “These hats will go to good use this weekend, and the upcoming cold spell.”
