Coastal Bend children and youth in the foster care system got a chance to play soccer this summer thanks to a partnership led by CASA of the Coastal Bend.

The Corpus Christi Football Club, The Sharks, held a soccer clinic over at GEF Zone on Corona to do just that on Saturday. Kids ages 8-16 learned how to play the sport and develop their skills straight from active players.

The event was held in part to help participants get their minds off the difficult times in their lives and interact with positive role models.

"With tomorrow being Father’s Day, today is a great opportunity for these children in foster care to interact with positive male role models," Samantha Koepp-Stemplinger, with CASA of the Coastal Bend, explained.

CASA staff were on hand to collect donated items to help provide foster youth a summer vacation full of laughter and fun. But if you didn’t make it out, there’s still a way to help.

Aloft Corpus Christi joins the Sharks in hosting a Summer Fun Drive for CASA throughout June.

Donations can be dropped off at Aloft Corpus Christi between 7a.m. and 7p.m. over at 5117 Embassy Drive. Those who donate an item valued at $10 or more will receive a ticket to the upcoming Sharks soccer game on Friday, June 22.

Types of items being accepted include:

  • Tickets to area attractions
  • Gift cards for: swimsuits, activities, treats
  • Outdoor games (sporting equipment, outdoor toys, etc)

Then, on Tuesday, June 19, from Aloft will host a Summer Fun Drive mixer at their WXYZ Bar from 5:30-9:30p.m. Donations will be accepted at the event, but in addition to Sharks tickets, attendees will get a chance to win a one-night "staycation" at Aloft Corpus Christi. Other giveaways will also be hosted.

The Sharks coaching staff, players and mascot will also be on-hand for a meet-and-greet. Guests can enjoy drink specials until 7:30p.m. and live music starting at 7.

The Summer Fun Drive continues through June 21. The Sharks will then host a CASA Night at their June 22 game, where proceeds from the fundraiser will be presented.
