You might call it the art of shopping.

La Palmera Mall and K Space Contemporary art gallery have partnered to make the mall (5488 S. Padre Island Drive) an extension of the K Space gallery (415 D Starr Street) located in downtown Corpus Christi.

As the oldest alternative art space in the Coastal Bend, the popular non-profit organization is dedicated to presenting and promoting contemporary art and providing a forum for emerging and mid-career artists whose works are experimental, non-commercial, or difficult to exhibit due to unusual installation requirements or site-specific ideas.

K Space Contemporary and La Palmera are celebrating the culture of the Coastal Bend by featuring large scale art installations year round throughout the mall. La Palmera will also host a number of K Space Contemporary Summer Mural Art Camps (in addition to those being held in the downtown studio), with students creating permanent, large scale interior murals for shoppers to enjoy.

And speaking of those camps, there will be 5 sessions to choose from for those who are 13 to 17 years of age:

  • Session 1: June 25-29
  • Session 2: July 9-13
  • Session 3: July 16-20
  • Session 4: July 23-27
  • Session 5: July 30-August 3

Times for all camps are 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM and classes are taught by professional artists. Art supplies and snacks are provided. Students are asked to bring a sack lunch.

Tuition is $160 ($140 for K Space members) and there are still opportunities to either sponsor a camper or apply for scholarships.
