World Oceans Day event aims to educate, reduce plastic waste

Plastic pollution remains a constant issue impeding oceanic conservation efforts, but local efforts hope to change that.

Over at Texas State Aquarium, staff hosted a special event to do just that in honor of World Oceans Day.

Visitors took part in activities that demonstrated ways to help keep our oceans clean, with this year’s theme focusing specifically on plastic.

From making a bag out of a t-shirt as an alternative to plastic bags to a "trash timeline" showing just how long it takes for garbage to decompose in the ocean, the event hoped to educate and inspire.

Of course, those that feel the direct effects of plastic pollution most prominently are the creatures that live in the ocean themselves, and that’s exactly what made the aquarium a great place to demonstrate the importance of protecting our seas.
