Once again this year, a special camp will be whistled into session near Rockport.

Camp Easy Breathers (CEB) will take place June 11th through 15th at Camp Aranzazu (5420 FM 1781 in Rockport). Unique, in that is for children ages 7 to 14 with persistent asthma.

Asthma is a chronic disease with no cure in which the airways in the lungs become swollen, clogged and overly sensitive to changes in the environment. During an attack, the muscles that surround the airways tighten and the inner lining of the airways swells and pushes inward. Asthma kills about 5,000 Americans each year and costs the United States more than $10 billion a year in direct and indirect medical expenses.

Camp organizers say CEB works to remind campers that it is possible to live a healthy, active life. Those who attend will ideally learn how to understand and manage their asthma, while participating in fun physical and social experiences, including:

  • Understanding asthma and how it affects them;
  • Recognizing and avoiding asthma attack triggers;
  • Recognizing warning signs to improve asthma management;
  • Knowing how and when to take medicine;
  • Staying healthy and staying in school.

Activities at the camp will include swimming, arts and crafts and a ropes course.

The cost of the camp is $325. This includes all meals, snacks and activities. There is limited space and scholarships are available.
