The oldest bar in Corpus Christi celebrated its 70th birthday on Saturday.

Over at Vernon’s, owners and staff threw a birthday bash featuring live music alongside a steak and shrimp cookout to treat their guests.

Some of those guests have been going to the local hotspot for over 50 years, even as it changed over the decades.

Originally, the bar had opened as a drive-in complete with carhops under owner Vernon Krause. Since then, it’s been owned by two different families and there’s little doubt that it’s become a community staple.

"It’s a part of Corpus," Justin Ramsey, a current owner of the bar, described. "You can look around, and see every kind of person in here. From judges, lawyers, politicians, to somebody who cleans out the trash can across the street. So, and everybody gets along, and has a good time."

All ages were welcome at the bar until 8 p.m. but for adults, the party continued until close at 2 a.m.
