Dozens of athletes hit the courts on Saturday in Corpus Christi for Special Olympics South Texas’ tennis competition.

In all, around 73 athletes between ages 8 and 20 took part in the event, which was organized by South Texas Special Olympics.

To prepare for the contest, athletes spent at least eight weeks training in the sport before arriving to take part in an individual skills competition.

"These athletes, most of them here today are being introduced to the sport for the first time. So we are working on skills, which means learn to serve, learn to volley, bounce the ball, hit the ball. So yeah, these are skills that will hopefully lead up some day to the actual sport of tennis," explained Alice Fulton-Garza with Special Olympics South Texas.

Awards were given out based on the results of each athlete’s matches.
