The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is now in the final weeks of operation at its nine Coastal Bend locations. This free income tax preparation service is provided to qualifying low- to moderate-income earners – those who earned up to $66,000 in 2017 – by IRS-trained and certified volunteers. VITA locations have differing times and dates of operation and begin closing April 11, 2018.

The VITA program provides this service with the goal of helping these individuals and families keep more of their income by both avoiding fees and utilizing all applicable tax credits, essentially pumping more money into the local economy. Last year, VITA put $5,141,991 back in taxpayer pockets.

The public can find more information by clicking on the VITA tab at uwcb.org. Please note that the IRS has determined that returns claiming disaster losses are outside of VITA’s scope.
