CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Nueces Co. ESD No. 2 Battalion Chief Dale Scott tells KRIS 6 News Friday that an attempted rescue at the Packery Channel South Jetty has failed.

A man died in Friday's rough water conditions attributed to Hurricane Delta, which currently is churning in the Gulf of Mexico.

First responders were called to the 11500 block of Gulf Beach Road for reports of an unconscious man found in the water just before 10:55 a.m. Friday.

The man, who was simply described as "older man," was taken from the water by Packery Channel.

"The man was still unconscious so they performed CPR," said Nueces County Emergency District Services Fire Chief Dale Scott. "He was transferred by medics to Bay Area (Hospital) in serious condition. Two lifeguards were transported to Bay Area with minor injuries."

Scott praised the efforts of the two lifeguards. He said the beach conditions are poor and is advising people to stay out of the water.

This is a developing story and we will update this article as more information becomes available.
