With all the challenges COVID-19 has brought to this year's high-school football season, most teams did not expect to go undefeated during the regular season.

But, the Veterans Memorial Eagles found a way to get it done.

They went 9-0 and earned a district championship.

That's not bad for a program that did not have the benefit of playing any preseason scrimmages.

"We all wanted to practice hard and our goal was to go undefeated," said Eagles WR Cameron De La Pena. "Hard work pays off and we are playing good and it's great."

The Eagles rarely were challenged during the regular season. The offense averaged 50 points per game while the defense played very stingy, but, a new season starts Friday night when the Eagles play host to McAllen Rowe at Buc Stadium, and the Eagles enter as big favorites to win.

"All the coaches preach preparation," said Eagles defensive end Adrian Rivera. "We thrive at getting ready for situations that are unexpected and that's one thing this team is really good at."

Veterans Memorial Head Coach Cody Simper wants to see his team improve during the post season and that starts at practice.

"One of the things we know about playoff football is that it's the teams that continue to get better as you advance in the playoffs," said Simper. "You never want to stay stagnant and we want to get better with every single practice and that's our focus, day in and day out"
