CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Cabaniss Sports Complex was supposed to be lively this weekend: baseball and softball scrimmages were set to start for the 2021 season, and track athletes were set to fill the football stadium.
The cold weather has caused that be to canceled.
"There will be no practices, there will be no games on Monday for CCISD," said the district's athletics director Brenda Marshall.
It also canceled scrimmages and games for outdoor sports for Friday and Saturday.
CCISD finds itself in a predicament: Tuesday at midnight is the UIL district certification deadline. That means districts have to have their playoff teams set by that time.
"We might have play a game midday on Tuesday," Marshall said.
If a game can't be played, CCISD will ask the UIL for an extension.
The weather is also affecting the college-level play. Texas A&M-Kingsville was expecting a big sports weekend.
Now, it is left with nothing.
"We have no events at all this weekend," said TAMU-K athletics director Steve Roach. "We went from probably having five or six different teams competing to zero in a matter of 24 hours."
The men's basketball team is on a massive winning streak. The only thing that seems to be able to slow them down: Mother Nature.
"Our basketball teams were already on the road and I got a call from the Texas A&M-Commerce AD saying it was really getting nasty up there," Roach said.
With the game now cancelled, the team has since turned around and is now heading home.
Texas A&M-Corpus Christi had games postponed and moved because of the weather.
COVID-19 has actually made its athletics department used to the constant changes.
"We've had to manage COVID-related challenges since the fall," said TAMU-CC athletic director Jon Palumbo.
Now, the spring-sports athletes who saw their 2020 seasons ripped away from them because of the pandemic, will have to wait a tad longer to get back to playing the games they love.
They will play again soon: Right now, it's all about safety.
"You can't take any chances," said Marshall.
