CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A new program is giving people a chance to save money on their fines if they can guess traffic trivia.
"Spin the Wheel" is Ingleside's non-traditional way of getting residents to pay their traffic fines.
If someone has a warrant out for their arrest, the Ingleside Municipal Court is gives that person the chance to spin the wheel to help that warrant go away.
At the police department, a court official will ask if you want to set up a payment plan, do community service, or pay your full fine amount.
If you choose to pay the full amount, you'll get the chance to answer trivia questions and save some cash.
For example: How far back should you stand from the curb when waiting for a school bus? Answer: 10 feet.
The correct answer to just one traffic safety trivia question earns a spin on the wheel which means a discount of up to $25.
“It gives people the opportunity to have a discounted rate and they'll be cleared from our active warrant list so they won't have to worry about getting stopped and pulled over and possibly arrested,” associate judge Emily Cramer. “Or put in jail in our city.”
The court also will waive the $50 fee that comes with each warrant.
But don't procrastinate: The deadline to save cash is just around the corner.
“Once our amnesty period is over on March 6th, starting March 7th, the Ingleside Police Department will be out and active looking for those with active warrants, so this gives people a chance to take care of them before they come,” Cramer said.
Ingleside Municipal Court is a ‘safe harbor’ court, which means if you show up, even after the amnesty period, to pay your warrant fines, you won’t be arrested or put in jail.
