CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi American Federation of Teachers are demanding Dr. Cynthia Hernandez resign.
Hernandez is the Corpus Christi Independent School District's Coordinator For Reading Instruction And Library Media Services.
The group is furious after comments Hernandez made at a CCISD school board meeting in regards of low reading test scores.
CCAFT held a press conference at its headquarters.
The teachers union is upset and waiting for answers as to why Cynthia Hernandez points the finger at other teachers, principals and faculty as the reason for low Accelerated Reader test scores.
“The fact of the matter is when Dr. Cynthia Hernandez made these statements at the school board meeting she tanked morale with CCISD we have gotten at least 100 calls from our members and from members of the community asking for her resignation,” said Corpus Christi President AFT Dr. Nancy Vera.
Vera said there are several reasons the group is demanding Hernandez's resignation.
Vera said some of those reasons include the fact Hernandez is married to the CCISD superintendent.
CCAFT feels the comments were unprofessional and no apology was made.
CCISD sent a statement in regards of test scores and comments about what took place at the board meeting.
The statement reads: CCISD recognizes and honors the dedication of the district and campus educators who work tirelessly to raise the bar in our district. It took everyone, at all levels, to achieve the TEA districtwide rating of 86, and our mission continues. We respectfully decline to engage in public disputes, preferring to remain devoted to the important work still to be done this school year. Working together, we will keep our focus where it belongs: on our students and their continued success. We thank the community for their enduring support of CCISD's efforts to improve the educational experience of all our children."
Vera said if Hernandez doesn't apologize or resign, AFT will be at the next school board meeting and will be expecting answers from the district.
