CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — On Saturday night, boats that were not secured behind the Marina Del Sol condominiums were damaged as Hurricane Hanna made landfall.
The hurricane ripped into the Coastal Bend, hitting Harbor Del Sol with a heavy storm surge. It caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to the boats in the harbor.
A number of boats was capsized or torn free from their dock slips Saturday night.
"I think we have around 35 boats, something like that, and we probably lost about 10 boats. Some of the boats broke loose, took out all the docks, and started sinking boats," said John Nolan, Del Sol's vice president of the Harbor.
Nolan said the incident could have been avoided.
"It could have been avoided if we would have had the materials to take and tie these boats up properly," Nolan said. "The boats shouldn't have been there to begin with, and we almost lost three people. In the meantime, they were on their boats, and one of them sunk.
"I don't know how we can fix it; there has been a lot of damage done. We are going to go ahead and put it back together one way or another. We have a nice little community here, and we are going to go with it."
The marina had 35 boats docked and 10 were lost to Hurricane Hanna. The next step for those who call this harbor home is rebuilding.
