The Veterans Memorial High School Lady Eagles basketball team is not only one of the best in the district, but one of the best in South Texas and even the entire state.

The secret to their success?

Their speed.

“We have a lot of quickness, we go man to man most of the time,” Veterans Memorial coach Roy Delapena said. “We press on a make and we push the ball, so we are playing at a fast pace and our girls are stepping up.”

The girls are more than just stepping up for the Lady Eagles this season, they are winning games in a big way.

The team is currently 24-3 this season, undefeated in district play with a 9-0 record. It was ranked seventh in the latest Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 5A state girls poll.

The players are attributing this success to the stellar play of their younger players.

“Even the freshmen coming in have stepped up on varsity,” senior guard Michaela James said. “They have played a big role in our shooting percentage.”

The Lady Eagles are off Friday but return to action Tuesday against the Moody Trojans.
