CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The countdown is on for the Games of Texas. The city of Corpus Christi will be hosting the 2020 Games of Texas from Thursday, July 30 to Sunday, August 2.
The Olympics style event will feature about 10,000 athletes ages 5-85 this year. Director of Parks and Recreation Jermel Stevenson said the community can expect about 30,000 people to make their way to Corpus Christi during this summer event.
“One of our partners in this is the Convention and Visitors Bureau, and that is a part of that recruitment. We want them to not only come for the Games of Texas and enjoy themselves for the four day event, we want them to stay the rest of that week too,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Jermel Stevenson.
The economic impact the weekend-long event will bring to the Coastal Bend is huge.
“The last time we hosted, there is an estimate right around $15,0000 in economic impact. We received those numbers from our Convention and Visitors Bureau either through our lodging, through restaurants, gift shops, all those things get reported back in. So this time, we want that to be the case as well,” said Stevenson.
Once again this will also be a great time to show off, not only our city, schools, and facilities, but also our first class retail, restaurants, and hospitality.
"It is going to bring some added revenue to all of us. It is going to help us big time. I am excited about this group coming into town. They did this back in 2012-2013, and it helped us all in our community as well as the city coffers," said Vice President of the Coastal Bend Restaurant Association Michael VanSyckle.
Stevenson said when Corpus Christi hosts these games, they will set the bar high.
“It is a time for us to really stick our chest out and to shine,” said Stevenson.
The last time Corpus Christi hosted the games of Texas was 2012 and 2013.
The Texas Amateur Athletic Federation has organized the event since 1986.
