CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Flour Bluff junior offensive lineman Johnny Dickson is destined to continue his career on Saturdays when he attends college.
Dickson is one of the state's top offensive line prospects in the state and is already receiving offers from top college programs like Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech.
"It's always been a dream to play division one football or any type of college football," said Dickson.
It didn't start out that way. Dickson had to work hard to get where he is today.
"All his hard work, his dedication, he is going to follow his dream," his mother, Candace Dickson, said.
Candace has been with Johnny every step of the way. From starting football at a young age to being the leader of the Hornets varsity football team, his mom has been at every game and has always made her presence known.
"You see her at games, you hear her," her son said. "She gets rowdy."
"I am the loudest person in the the stands," Candace Dickson said. "I make it known so he knows where I'm at. I used to have to stand up and say 'hey baby' but now he can hear me."
She has been yelling from the stands, watching her 6-foot-2, 292-pound son develop into the young man who has a great future ahead of him.
"His hard work, going to practice every day, working on his off time you can tell he wants it," she said.
In this case, "it" means two different things for Johnny.
It means that he will achieve his dream of playing college football at the highest level. And it also means that he will be giving back to his mom, the woman who has been there from day one, the one who has given everything to her son, his biggest fan.
"She means the word to me. It is hard to put into words," said Johnny. "All the work I put in is for her, she doesn't have to pay for college. If we didn't have her, I don't know what we would do."
Johnny Dickson is heading for continuing his career at the next level.
He is not sure where he will sign. But wherever he ends up, expect Candace Dickson to be there with him.
