The Veterans Memorial Eagles will be aiming to continue their remarkable surge through the playoffs.

The Eagles, in only their fourth year as a program, will be aiming to become the first Corpus Christi ISD  school to advance to the fourth round of the playoffs since Carroll reached the state quarterfinals in 1988.

To get there, the Eagles (12-0) will hook up with 11-1 Mission Veterans Memorial at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Alamodome in San Antonio in our Connelly Foundation Marquee Matchup.

The Eagles made it this far after their 58-21 triumph over San Antonio Harlan last week at Buc Stadium.

Veterans coach Cody Simper knows the challenges of advancing on such a big stage against an opponent like the Patriots.

“They’re a very talented team,” Simper said. “They have speed all over the field offensively and defensively. It is very impressive how hard they play in every aspect of the game.

“They have one of the more prolific quarterbacks in the state right now so they present a lot of challenges for us. But we’ve been practicing hard all week and we expect to go and play hard against them.”

The excitement has stoked the Eagles’ fan base.

“They are excited, our entire community is excited about going up to San Antonio and playing this game on Saturday,” Simper said. “For us its mostly about staying calm, sticking to the game plan and going out and executing what we’ve been practicing all week.”

A win for the Eagles will make them one of the final eight teams in their bracket.

And make some history for the emerging school at the same time.
