It’s no surprise that Flour Bluff is making a deep playoff run.

The 9-3 Hornets will hook up with 11-1 San Antonio Wagner at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Alamodome in San Antonio in the Class 5A Division I regional semifinals.

Flour Bluff looked impressive in a 35-21 victory last week against San Antonio Southwest. It stretched their winning streak to four games.

They’ll be facing a challenge against Wagner, a team picked by many to claim the region championship.

But it’s something that the Hornets have been eagerly anticipating for a long time.

Flour Bluff coach Chris Steinbruck said the chance to play in the dome will be a highlight for his team.

“It’s exciting,” he said. “The kids are fired up about it.”

Friday’s appearance is a culmination of the Hornets’ season-long determined work ethic – along with a carrot dangling in front of them.

“I let them know last week that if we take care of business, there is a good chance we are going to play in a good venue like the Alamodome. So they were excited about it.”

Steinbruck is no stranger to the Alamodome and that experience could help his team.

“This will be my fifth time to coach in the Alamodome,” Steinbruck said. “We have played some really good teams there. Lake Travis in 09, played Port Lavaca there in 2009, so them (his team) growing up as kids in our program, (they) have been to great venues to see older Hornets play.

“Now it’s their opportunity to go out in a big stage in Round 3 to perform well. We are going to prepare these kids and they will be able to perform at a high level Friday night.”

There’s no question Steinbruck and his coaching staff will put together a great game plan to beat Wagner. And we’ll be there for all of the highlights on Friday Night Fever after the game.
