It’s been a record-breaking season for the Woodsboro Eagles, picked as our Nissan Dealers Friday Night Fever Team of the Week.
The small town of Woodsboro has a population of slightly more than 1,400. But it’s the home of some big-time football.
The Eagles have been tearing it up this season. They are undefeated and have won their second consecutive district title. It’s the first time they’ve accomplished that feat in 37 seasons.
Only 28 players make up their roster and many play both ways.
But they always seem to find a way. And now they are headed to a showdown at 7:30 p.m. Friday against another undefeated team, Falls City, in the regional semifinals in Beeville.
Running back/defensive back Roel Flores credits the Eagles’ big season on their intensity.
“Practicing every day, working hard, coaches pushing us just doing what we have to do to prepare for the game,” Flores said.
Even after last season’s success, lineman Garrett Burns said the Eagles wanted much more.
“Yeah, we worked hard this offseason and the senior class we always said we wanted to be the first team to go undefeated in Woodsboro,” Burns said. “So that’s what we have been working for.”
Coach Xavier Rangel said his team has been resilient during its undefeated start.
“You know, this is something you always strive for,” Rangel said. “It’s always tough whether it’s injuries, lucky bounces or whatever it is. We have been lucky with those so far this year.
“And of course, you are always striving for it but it’s very difficult to do. But like I said, a little luck along with some great players and great coaching staff and everything has been put together. We are looking forward to Friday night and continuing it.”
