CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A south side homeowner shot and killed a man he found inside his vehicle this morning.

That homeowner was an off-duty DPS officer.

It happened on the 7000 block of Clubgate Drive, near Staples and Lipes.

Neighbors here say they are still “shaken up” after that shooting overnight.

Just after 1:30 a.m., Corpus Christi police were called out to the home.

Here is what police are saying happened...

The homeowner was notified by his security system that something was going on in his driveway.

When he went outside, he saw a man inside his vehicle.

Allegedly, there was a confrontation between the two men which ended in that off-duty officer shooting the other man.

We're told the homeowner did stay on scene and performed first aid measures until paramedics got to the scene.

The man who was shot was taken to the hospital but later died.

One neighbor we spoke to who did not want to be on camera shared her concerns and her reasons for also using a home surveillance system.

“I feel safer that I have an alarm system. which is set all the time,” she said. “But this happens everywhere. There's nothing we can do about it except just hope and pray that it doesn't happen to one of us.”

It is unclear if the off-duty officer fired a personal weapon or his department-issued gun.

We'll continue to bring you the latest information as it becomes available to us.

Multiple agencies are assisting in the investigation, including the DPS, the Corpus Christi Police Department and the Texas Rangers.
