CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — Jan. 21 is national Squirrel Appreciation Day.

The day was created in 2001 by Christy Hargrove, a wildlife rehabilitator affiliated with the Western North Carolina Nature Center.

“Celebration of the event itself is up to the individual or group — anything from putting out extra food for the squirrels to learning something new about the species,” said Hargrove.

There are plenty of ways to celebrate the critters on their special day. Nationaldaycalendar.com suggests setting up a squirrel feeder, visiting a park and squirrel watching, or watching a squirrel documentary. Make sure to use #SquirrelAppreciationDay when you post your squirrel pics on social media.
