BATON ROUGE, LA — In Louisiana, a newborn has died in a coronavirus related death.

Officials in Baton Rouge say the infant's mother had coronavirus and was hospitalized on a ventilator.

That's when doctors decided to deliver the premature girl at 22-weeks.

The child survived for a day before passing away.

Doctors say it appears the premature baby died from early delivery.

Dr. Beau Clark, with the East Baton Rouge Coroner, said, "She went into preterm labor and ultimately delivered the baby prematurely and in doing so the baby, because of the extreme prematurity, did not survive."

They say there is a chance the infant had contracted coronavirus from something called vertical transmission.

"That's when a mother can be infected by a bacterial virus that is then transmitted through the placenta to the unborn child," Dr. Clark said.
